Days Discover China through the lens with Ken Duncan
China Map [enlarge]
Tue: Australia/Hong Kong/Hangzhou
Depart Australia on Cathay Pacific Airways flight to Hangzhou via Hong Kong. On arrival, transfer to the Sofitel West Lake Hotel and enjoy your two nights’ stay.
During breakfast, Ken Duncan will conduct a group briefing before venturing into the countryside to capture the best possible images of the Autumn coloured leaves. You will also marvel over the tea terraces in a region which produces one of China’s most famous varieties of green tea. In the afternoon, we will visit Huagang Park, well known for the golden fish of all sizes and colours, as well as the Autumn’s leaves from maple trees mirrored on the lakes - a magnificent view which offers many photo opportunities. Take a leisurely cruise on the West Lake - surrounded by green hills, islands, temples, pavilions and arched bridges. The lake has long been considered one of the scenic wonders of China. A sunset shoot over the West Lake was listed as one of the 12 best spots around the world by CNN. Here, we will find the best location to witness and photograph sunset.
Meals: Breakfast 1 | Lunch 1 | Dinner 1
For the best sunrise photo experience, an early-morning trip to Precious Stone Mountain will have us in another good location to capture great photographs of the West Lake and downtown - in the best possible light. We then return to hotel for breakfast. Bid farewell to Hangzhou with a 3-hour leisurely drive to Tunxi where we will spend one night at the Crowne Plaza Yucheng Hotel.
An overnight bag is required to be packed tonight for two-night stay on top of Huangshan from the next day.
Fri: Tunxi/Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)
Discover Tunxi, and visit the Ancient Street to see fine examples of carefully-preserved architecture, many houses now converted into restaurants and shops. Then travel through some of China’s most beautiful countryside. See emerald green coloured rice paddies and small villages before joining the cable car ride to the summit of Huangshan. Here, you will spend two nights at the Xihai Hotel. Be prepared for the sunset photo after check-in the hotel. You will have a great opportunity to learn some photography tips (and a few tricks) from Ken.
Sat: Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)
We start early this morning to capture another sunrise of a serenely presented mountain scene, an inspiration for many Chinese poets and artists. Later, explore on foot the “four ultimate beauties” of Huangshan - the fantastically shaped rocks, the ‘sea of clouds’ swirling around the peaks, the hot springs and the ancient gnarled pines clinging to the rock faces.
This morning, we descend from the mountain by cable car. After lunch, transfer to the airport for flight to Chongqing where we will spend one night at the Crowne Plaza Riverside Hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure.
Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring the protected cultural site of Ciqikou Old Town which dates back more than 1700 years. Here, you can capture a glimpse of the traditional way of life of the locals. Be prepared to find many outlets for craftwork and groceries, tea houses and embroidery workshops. It is truly an amazing place to shop and experience. Fly to Jiu Huang airport in the early evening and transfer to Huanglong, located on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The average altitude here is 3550 metres. Spend one night at Seercuo International Hotel.
Huanglong Valley is particularly scenic as it is made up of snow-capped peaks and is the easternmost area of the Chinese glaciers. A diverse forest ecosystem along with magnificent limestone formations, waterfalls, hot springs and an array of endangered animals make for many photo opportunities. We will take the cable car to the Snow Peak area, for a 2km walk to take in a spectacular view of Five-colour Lake and a panoramic image of Huanglong Valley. The valley has a dense distribution of thousands of travertine colour-ponds, travertine flow streams and stalactite caves. In all, it is the world’s largest, intact and unique karst landscape. Hike down the boardwalks of the park with photographic stops en route. You will spend three nights at Howard Johnson Tianyuan Resort in Jiuzhaigou.
Today, we will capture images of the incredible scenery and dramatic karsts of the Goddess Lake area. Again, Ken will assist you to do more with your photography than you even thought possible and guide you in perfecting your skills. This evening, enjoy the spectacular show ’The Romance of Song Dynasty’.
Another day will be spent in Jiuzhaigou, one of China’s most scenic reserves and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will be astounded by this beautiful alpine mountain valley dotted with Tibetan villages, snow-capped mountains, and magnificent blue lakes said to be the broken slivers of the Tibetan goddess Semo’s Mirror. Ken will share his photography knowledge and experience as the group moves around the heritage site.
Fly to Chengdu this morning to stay at the Intercontinental Century City Hotel. Spend your afternoon in the old alley which is lined with traditional architecture from the Qing Dynasty. Expect to see quaint restaurants, traditional teahouses and experience the life of old Chengdu. This evening you will be sated to a special Sichuan cuisine farewell dinner.
One of the highlights of your China experience will be when you see the adorable pandas in the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base this morning before transferring to the airport for your overnight flight home via Hong Kong.
