Jiuzhaigou, over 2,000 metres above sea level, is named after nine Tibetan settlements found in the area. More than 110 crystalline lakes are scattered across the beautiful valley rimmed by snow-capped mountains and waterfalls. Spend a day around this UNESCO World Heritage-listed area and visit a Tibetan family home. In the evening, enjoy the music and dance of the Tibetan and Qiang nationalities.
Travel 102km by car through peaceful valleys to Songpan, once a Ming dynasty garrison guarding the 2,500 metre mountain pass. The town, with its original stone walls, wooden buildings and ancient gates remains a marketplace for Tibetan, Qiang and Hui communities. See cattle herders clop down cobblestone streets on horseback and artisans peddle pots, turquoise jewellery, sheepskin coats and yak butter in the market.
Return to Chengdu for overnight.
