1

1: AUSTRALIA / HIROSHIMA

Depart Sydney with Qantas Airways on an overnight flight to Hiroshima via Tokyo. Passengers from other capital cities will travel via Sydney to Hiroshima (via Tokyo).

2: ARRIVE IN HIROSHIMA

On arrival at Hiroshima International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for one night at the Hiroshima Washington Hotel or similar. Relax and enjoy the remainder of the day in this truly famous, historic and vibrant city.

3: HIROSHIMA /FUKUYAMA

Your Japan experience begins today as you travel to Miyajimaguchi where you will aboard a cruise to Miyajima to see the Itsukushima Shrine - a UNESCO World Heritage site that at high tide, appears to be floating on water. Continue to Hiroshima with a stop at Peace Memorial Park, located near the epicentre of the first atomic bomb. Gaze in wonder at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome), the only original structure left standing in the area. A stop will be made at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, featuring exhibitions of items related to the atomic bomb. Tonight, you will enjoy a traditional Japanese Welcome Dinner. Stay one night at the New Castle Hotel or similar.

4: KURUSHIKI / KOBE / OSAKA

Today we drive to Kurashiki to visit Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. With its scenic canals lined with weeping willows, Edo-period gardens and historic merchant houses, the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter offers an authentic feel of the old Japan in the heart of one of the oldest merchant towns. Continue towards the region near Kobe to visit the famous Nadagiku Shuzo Sake Brewery. This region has long been famous for its sake production. Learn how traditional Japanese Sake is made and experience an authentic Japanese atmosphere. This afternoon travel to Osaka. Discover the latest trends in Shinsaibashi, the prime shopping area in Osaka before walking amongst the iconic neon lights and mechanised signs of Dotonbori. Stay one night at the Hotel Osaka Bay Tower or similar.

5: OSAKA / NARA / KYOTO

Visit the city’s famous landmark - Osaka Castle Garden - surrounded by greenery, the garden commands a splendid view of the castle tower and the stone wall of the moat. Then travel to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital established in 710. Visit Todai-ji Temple, an ancient 8th-century structure that houses some of Japan’s national treasures with 3000 antique bronze and stone lanterns. A stop will be made at Deer Park, one of the oldest parks in Japan and home to hundreds of free-roaming deer. We then continue on to Kyoto to visit Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) where you find the top two floors completely covered in gold leaves. Your overnight stay will be at a local home to experience the true essence of the Japanese lifestyle. Enjoy a home-cooked dinner (with local beer) and relax and pamper yourself at the hot springs.

6: KYOTO / GIFU

Morning at leisure. At noon, enjoy a special Tea Ceremony at a traditional Kyoto tea house. Meet a local Maiko and Geisha as you sip green tea and watch an elegant performance. This afternoon enjoy an exclusive Arashiyama discovery experience. Stroll under the shade of the towering bamboo forest in Sagano, which are the most photographed of Kyoto sights. This natural gem is completely contrasting to the bustling city of Kyoto. Overnight stay in Gifu.

7: GIFU / SHIRAKAWAGO / MATSUMOTO

Today, visit the historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Located in a mountainous region cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time, these villages with their Gassho-style houses survived on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms, an examples of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to the environment and the people’s social and economic circumstances. Later, travel to Takayama Jinya, a former government outpost that was established in order to bring the Hida Province under the direct control of the Edo Bakufu. Stay one night at the Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu or similar.

8: MATSUMOTO / NAGANO / ISAWA

Morning visit to Japan’s Daio Wasabi Farm, the farm itself is a pleasure to stroll through and provides magnificent views of the alps and watermills. Then visit Matsumoto Castle – one of three of Japan’s premier historic castles. Explore Suwa Grand Shrine which is believed to have been founded over 1200 years ago. Tonight, relax and enjoy a Japanese hot springs experience with an overnight stay at Hotel Isawa Hanasui or similar.

9: ISWA / MT FUJI / LAKE ASHI / YOKOHAMA

Visit Mt Fuji’s 5th Station that is located at 2300 metres above sea level and offers a vantage point for Mt Fuji and the surrounding lakes (subject to weather conditions). The 5th Station also features shrines, torii gates, souvenir shops, and perhaps a few climbers completing their preparations for their ascent. Then drive to Lake Ashi, located nearby in Hakone National Park, to admire the scenery as you take a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mt Fuji and Mt Komagatake. Spend one night at the Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel or similar.

10: YOKOHAMA / TOKYO

Drive to Tokyo, the largest city and capital of Japan. Enjoy your day visiting some of the major sights, including the Tokyo Tower with its 360 degree panoramic views of the city, the Tsukiji Outer Fish Markets and Asakusa Kannon (Sensoji) Temple, Tokyo’s most famous Buddhist Temple. Drive past the famous shopping districts of Ginza and Akihabara. This afternoon enjoy a cruise of Tokyo to experience a different view. This evening is at your leisure to explore the nightlife of Tokyo. Spend two nights at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa or similar.
