A favourite haunt of pirates until the early 20th Century, Colane Island represents the quiet side to Macau, it focal point a sleepy quaintly presented former fishing village with its pastel coloured shops, main square and Sam Seng Temple. Sandy beaches are also a feature of Coloane along with the tasty egg tarts straight from the oven of Lord Stow’s Bakery.
Inspired by the Las Vegas Strip in the USA’s Nevada, the Cotai Strip on Taipa Island is a casino and tourism project which began with the opening of the massive Venetian Macau and its indoor Venice canal and St Mark’s square replica in 2007.
With such an array of beautifully spruced up colonial buildings, churches, museums, gardens and historic cemeteries, little wonder Macau was rewarded UNESCO World Heritage listing. The Ruins of St Paul’s church is a familiar landmark on the peninsula, along with the patterned mosaic stone pavement of Senado Square, the Guia Fortress and Lighthouse and the most famous and picturesque temple in Macau – the A-Ma Temple on the waterfront of the Inner Harbour.
The island has two distinct characters – historic and contemporary, the former centred on the village of the same name, the latter focused on the new ritzy resorts with their giant casinos, mixed dining options, world class daily and evening entertainment and shops upon designer shops. Taipa Village is renowned for its tiny stores, restaurants and row of lime-green painted villas which were built by wealthy Macanese families in the 1920s and today house the Taipa House Museum.
