Helen’s Journey

Having spent much of my early life in travel, primarily in China and other corners of Asia in the 1970s, I dreamt of building on these inspirational experiences by not writing novels but by establishing my own travel company. It was my way of introducing my memories to travellers to experience and enjoy.

I’ll never forget my first visit to China. It was in the mid-70s when the People’s Republic was a bit of an intriguing mystery to the outside world. From the very moment I set foot in this vast country, I was awestruck by its beauty and charmed by its culture, and the countless welcoming smiles of the locals. Few foreigners had seen China nor had China seen many tourists. I was somewhat of a pioneer and those early encounters were among some of my memorable China experiences.

I am also very proud of the contribution I made to tourism in the early eighties, in facilitating dialogue that eventually led to the inaugural service between China and Australia.

I tailored exclusive itineraries for former Australian Prime Minister, the late Gough Whitlam, and his wife Margaret, ultimately, escorting many International Study Programs to countries around the world as well as China.

Many years later I remain proud that my company has been repaid for its professionalism and success through a swag of travel industry and prestigious awards. The company’s achievements have reached gold medal level, being named among Australia’s top 100 fastest-growing private companies for two years by Price Waterhouse Coopers and Business Review Weekly. Awards for Outstanding Reputation for Service Excellence by HSBC Bank for several years and Outstanding Achievement in Sales by Qantas Airways and Dragonair. In 2011, an award for “Great Contribution in reaching the milestone of 200,000 visitors to Shanghai” was presented by Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration, these achievements a proud testimony to our continued success and professionalism. They are all treasured by me and the remainder of the team.

For my own personal perspective, I was honoured to reach the finals of the very competitive Telstra Businesswoman of the Year and the award from the Australian Society of Travel Writers as “Communicator of the Year “.

So much has happened in the past three decades ago. I am happy to say that my love of travel and passion to experience more have never been stronger.
